How to upload grade reports from Easy Grade Pro

EasyGrade Pro is a simple, feature-rich grading program. It's built-in password security for each report is ideal for easy integration with the modern Web where security is always an issue. This tutorial explains the steps a teacher should follow to upload grade reports to a web site.

Using Easy Grade Pro for managing your grading records has many advantages, including:

  1. Inexpensive and easy to use
  2. Macintosh or MS Windows compatible
  3. Multi-class management
  4. Many ready to use reports for print, email, or Web output
  5. Update grades off line at anytime and upload to the Web when ready

We have no affiliation with the makers of Easy Grade Pro, however as teachers we regularly use this application and recommend it to others. One primary advantage of Easy Grade Pro is that it includes per-report password protection, thus relieving teachers of the burden of administering an online user authentication system for each class. This is particularly helpful on Joomla sites due to Joomla's well-known weaknesses in area of fine-grained user authentication,

Requirements

You must have the following in place before you can upload Easy Grade Pro reports.

  1. The Easy Grade Pro application, which can be purchased online from Orbis Software. (Please note that CommunityGrove has no business relationship with Orbis Software. This link is for informational purposes only.)
  2. A File Transfer Protocol (FTP) application. Many FTP applications are free, or if you use a WYSIWYG editor such as Adobe DreamWeaver, you can take advantage of built-in FTP functions. See our list of recommended FTP software.
  3. A password-protected FTP directory on your Web server. Contact your system administrator or CommunityGrove Support to have this setup.

Directions

Export reports from EasyGrade Pro

  1. Start EasyGrade Pro on your local computer.
  2. In the File menu, choose Internet/Email.
  3. In the resulting screen, choose the options you require for your reports, such as which classes to include, which students to include, which assignments include, etc. You will be able to immediately view the results of your selections as you make adjustments.
  4. When you are satisfied with the reports, select the Create button in the lower-right corner. A warning window will appear explaining that you must now choose a directory on your local computer to safe your report files. It is usually easiest to choose the same location each time letting the application overwrite the previously exported files. Make sure you know where this location is on your computer as you will need to find it again.
  5. Quit EasyGrade Pro.

Check the exported reports

  1. It's a good idea to check the reports for errors before uploading them to your server. To do this, use a Web browser, such as Firefox or MS Explorer.
  2. Start your browser and chose Open File in the File menu. In the resulting dialog box, navigate to the directory in which you saved the report files, and open the index.html file.
  3. If you added password protection, you will need to enter a valid username and password to view a report. You can find the usernames and passwords you created in GradeBook Pro.
  4. If the reports look good, move on to the next step. If you see problems, go back to EasyGrade Pro and adjust your report options as needed.

FTP reports to your Web site

Every FTP program's user interface is different, so the following directions are generic, but the essentials are always the same. You will need the following information to establish a connection.

1. The Web server's FTP address
2. Your FTP user ID
3. Your FTP password
4. The path to your FTP folder on the remote Web server
  1. Start your FTP program and create a remote connection to the FTP directory on your web server.
  2. In your FTP program open a window to your local file system and find your report files.
  3. Open an FTP connection to your remote Web server.
  4. Copy your report files from your local computer to the remove server.
  5. If the transfer was successful, your reports should be available on the Web. To check this, start your web browser, and browse to your FTP address on your Web site.
  6. Check the date of the files.
  7. Here is the URL for a set of grading reports that were uploaded using this method.
