Error: 0x800CCC0E. My ISP blocks outgoing SMTP on Port 25.

Many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) block outgoing SMTP connections from their customers on port 25 in an attempt to cut down on the number of computers being hijacked and used to relay Unsolicited Commercial Email (UCE)/SPAM.

While this type of blocking can cut down on UCE/SPAM, it can also cause problems when trying to connect to your account using SMTP to send email from a client application, such as Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird.

Luckily, our servers are configured to accept SMTP connections on both ports 25 and 1025. Simply change the outgoing SMTP port from 25 to 1025 in your email application.

Different email clients show different error messages for this type of blocking. One of the common error codes generated by Microsoft email clients is: 0x800CCC0E and this will be displayed something like -

The connection to the server has failed. Account: '<account name>',
Server: '<SMTP server name>', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure (SSL): No, Socket Error: 10051, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E
